Heritage Forests Campaign Once They're Gone, They're Gone Forever

"Today’s ruling is a clear victory for the American people and 58.5 million acres of pristine forests. The court has ruled today in favor of the millions of Americans who participated in the most inclusive rulemaking in history.

“Despite the Bush Administration’s failure to represent the will of the American people in this case, the public process speaks for itself. It included over 600 public meetings, years of scientific analysis, and more than 1.6 million comments.

“In the midst of a continual anti-environmental onslaught by the Bush Administration, the court's decision today renews hope for permanent roadless protection.

“It is time for the Bush Administration to listen to the millions of Americans who want our last undeveloped national forests protected – it is time to implement the Roadless Area Conservation Rule as originally adopted and to stop working to undermine it at every turn.”

“Adopted in January 2001, The Roadless Area Conservation Rule protects 58.5 million acres of national forest lands from most commercial logging and road-building.”
