Heritage Forests Campaign News Release

June 7, 2001

Statement of Jane Danowitz, Director of Heritage Forests Campaign, On Forest Service Interim Protection of Roadless Areas Directive

WASHINGTON -- "The Bush administration's focus on forest planning as an option for the long-term protection of roadless areas in our National Forests is a disturbing step backward. If this is the roadmap by which the Bush administration intends to proceed on its upcoming amended rulemaking process, it could be a return to the old days when timber was king."

Background: The U.S. Forest Service today distributed a directive from Chief Dale Bosworth. Click here for a copy of the directive.
