Earth Day Looms: Forests Still in Limbo

ADS HIT THE AIRWAVES, CRITICIZE THE WHITE HOUSE
The Heritage Forests Campaign is running a new TV ad in Washington, DC through Earth Day that criticizes the Bush administration for failing to keep its promises to protect our national forest. If you would like to receive a VHS copy of the ad, please contact Jennifer Coate. To read the text of the release in PDF format, Click here.

NEW REPORT DOCUMENTS RISK POSED BY BUSH ROLLBACKS
On Thursday, The Wilderness Society The Wilderness Society in collaboration with a number of environmental groups will be releasing a new report, Our Wild Forests At Risk. The report reveals that the Bush administration, despite promises and cheered on by special interest friends, has rolled back broad national forest protections through obscure bureaucratic maneuvers that seriously weaken roadless area protections and is proceeding with a number of timber sales in roadless areas around the country, including sales in the Tongass national forest (in Alaska) and a number of national forests.

CONGRESSIONAL FRUSTRATION MOUNTS, GATHERING SUPPORT FOR BILL
You may also have noticed that a bipartisan group of members of Congress, apparently growing impatient with the Bush administrationís failure to keep its promises, are gathering support for legislation to protect our last wild national forests by codifying the roadless rule into law by circulating a dear colleague letter. It is important to remember that Congress has a long track record of support for roadless protection.
