Heritage Forests Campaign News Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 26, 2001 Statement of Jane Danowitz, Director of the Heritage Forest Campaign, on Today's Senate Agriculture Committee Action on the Nomination of Mark ReyWashington, D.C. -- "We continue to be concerned about the nomination of Mark Rey, a longtime top timber lobbyist, to be the Bush administration¹s point person in charge of protecting America's national forests."Mark Rey's nomination is the strongest signal yet that the timber industry will have broader influence over the Bush administration¹s national forest policy. "Mr. Rey's well- documented opposition to balanced national forest protections, including the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, is contrary to the overwhelming public support for our national forests. Mr. Rey, hand-in-hand with his timber industry allies, would like to take us down a path that leads to more logging, mining, and drilling in our national forests. "More than 2.1 million Americans have very clearly told the Forest Service that they want roadless areas protected. In the last 60 days alone, more than 650,000 Americans have submitted written comments expressing strong support for roadless area protection."
