Statement of Jane Danowitz, Director of the Heritage Forests Campaign, on Earth Day

WASHINGTON -- Earth Day should be a golden opportunity for any White House to trumpet its record of environmental protection. But not this year.

In 2002, the Bush administration can only claim credit for ignoring the public and rolling back critical environmental protections at the behest of its corporate interest friends.

Whether the issue is our air, our water, or our national forests, it is clear that the corporate lobbyists have the ear of the Bush administration. At every turn, the White House, in concert with corporate allies, has turned a deaf ear to the public’s interest in a cleaner environment for future generations.

Hopefully Congress is listening to the public, because the White House clearly is not.
